The Center is grounded in a committed value of science for action and social equity. To put this principle into practice, the Center leadership engages actively in science communication and public scholarship that connect research to pressing social, moral, and policy issues.
This work takes multiple forms: public talks, op-eds, podcasts, expert advising for journalists, and collaborations with early-career scientists as co-authors and co-presenters. By raising public consciousness and ensuring that research informs science-based policymaking, the Center affirms that scholarship must live in public life as well as the academy.
Public-facing contributions have appeared in Scientific American and The Boston Globe, among others, bringing rigorous scholarship to broad audiences. Dr. Irfan also leads the Climate Motifs series, which explores how climate change and health intersect with every dimension of the human condition.
In all of this, the Center bridges the gap between scientific knowledge and the public's science literacy, fostering informed decision-making, cultivating scientific literacy, and advancing equity.
