Alicia Thoe is a Research Fellow at the Public Health Praxis Center, where she conducts scoping reviews and impact gap analyses on applied learning pedagogy and AI ethics in public health education, while contributing to website development and curriculum documentation efforts.
She recently completed her Master of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Services, building upon her interdisciplinary undergraduate foundation from UC Santa Cruz, where she earned dual degrees: a B.S. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and a B.A. in Critical Race and Ethnic Studies. This unique academic background bridges scientific inquiry with social justice perspectives, informing her approach to public health challenges.
Her diverse professional experience spans public health operations and clinical settings, including leading COVID-19 testing operations across multiple campus sites and working as an Emergency Department Medical Scribe. These frontline experiences have shaped her understanding of health system challenges and community needs, directly informing her current research on educational approaches in public health.
Alicia's research interests center on climate health and social determinants of health, where she aims to leverage evidence synthesis and policy research to address health disparities. Her interdisciplinary training positions her to pursue systematic approaches to understanding how environmental and social factors impact population health outcomes.

During her Research Fellowship at the Public Health Praxis Center, Alicia completed two major research deliverables examining critical gaps in public health education. The first project was a comprehensive scoping review of applied educational practices in public health education, conducting systematic literature analysis to synthesize evidence on methodologies like project-based learning and their effectiveness for student engagement and skill development. The second project conducted an impact gap analysis of AI ethics training in public health education, comparing domestic and international programs to identify significant educational gaps and develop policy recommendations for responsible AI integration in curricula. Additionally, she supported curriculum documentation efforts by synthesizing educational materials from multiple learning management platforms and contributed to website development initiatives for improved research dissemination and educational resource accessibility.
